Rachel
A lifelong beachcomber, for over a decade Rachel White has created intricate, uniquely contemplative pieces of assemblage art from found objects sourced during her beachcombing walks along Dorset’s beautiful Jurassic Coast. Established in 2011, Rachel retails her work online under the name DriftwoodFish. She is a member of the Dorset Arts & Crafts Association and a member of the Dorset Coast Forum.
Born and raised on the Dorset coast, with North Dorset roots traceable back to the 1700s, Rachel has spent much of her adult life living in and around the Home Counties. In 2004 she returned to live in Dorset once again. On her daily walks to gather driftwood and discarded fishing ropes Rachel also gathers small found objects: seashells, fossils, sea glass and other beach ephemera. Every piece of driftwood sculpture is the result of many hours spent in thoroughly enjoyable creativity. Rachel now lives in Weymouth, in a small house surrounded by seagulls, where on windy nights with the wind in the right direction fierce waves can be heard pounding the pebbles on Chesil Beach. In her home workshop she creates driftwood art in her signature style, featuring intricately interwoven small beachcombing treasures. Each tiny interwoven object is transformed into something vitally different, an integral part of a whole new creation. Mark
A working seaman all his life until his recent early retirement from the Merchant Navy, Mark was the co-founder of DriftwoodFish and designer of many of the templates, some of which Rachel still uses for her creations. He is now the designated beachcomber when Rachel is working.
