Project Litter Free Fleet x DriftwoodFish
DriftwoodFish is the official sponsor of Project Litter Free Fleet for 2023.
Project #litterfreefleet.....what is it?
Chesil Beach and the Fleet Lagoon are jointly recognised as an area of high conservation value through the many national and international designations it is afforded - SSSI, SPA, SAC, Ramsar and being the centre of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
The Fleet lagoon, the UK's largest tidal lagoon, is slowly filling with plastic pollution. The foreshore and strand lines are littered with micro plastics which are almost impossible to remove.
Project Litter Free Fleet aims to remove the plastic before it breaks down and is still manageable.
A very small percentage of the plastic is from local littering, beach and coast path users, for example. The majority is marine waste from the shipping and fishing industries.
Why is the project needed?
The Chesil side of the Fleet has limited access on foot. It is not cleaned by any other official body and has restrictions placed upon it to protect wildlife.
The first seven weeks of the project has seen 1,100 plastic bottles removed from the Fleet. Project Litter Free Fleet is ongoing.
